8mm was was introduced to the average consumer in 1932 by the the Eastman Kodak Company as a cheaper, more accessible alternative to 16mm film.

Upon its introduction, 8mm film became extremely popular because it allowed families to document special events such as birthday's, graduations, reunions, weddings as moving films.

In the 1960's, as the picture abd color quality of the film and camera technology improved,  Eastman Kodak introduced Super 8 Film and the Super 8 camera.

The Super 8 camera required no threading of the film and included features like automatic exposure, auto-zoom, and the films that could record sound in 1973.
